Accessible buildings: practical guidance for architects and developers
Short answer: accessibility should be designed as a continuous route, not as an isolated ramp or lift. The solution depends on site geometry, level change, installation conditions, the intended use and safety requirements. The final configuration must be checked for the specific site.
Plan accessibility before construction starts
Consulting the equipment manufacturer during design helps verify installation space, route geometry, fixing points, power and site conditions before work begins. Retrofitting after finishing is usually more constrained.
Check the complete user route
A lift by the entrance does not make a building accessible on its own. Review the approach, doors, landings, level changes, route to the passenger lift or destination, and whether each section can be used independently.
Do not specify a ramp where the geometry cannot work
A ramp is appropriate only when sufficient space and safe project geometry are available. If the required parameters cannot be achieved, consider another engineered solution instead of a token installation.
Select equipment for the actual requirement
Vertical and inclined platforms, lifts and other solutions follow different paths and have different constraints. Selection depends on the level change, route configuration, dimensions, installation location and intended use, not only the lowest price.
Safety is not a token cost-saving item
