Lifting solutions for private houses and cottages

In a private home, a lift may serve different purposes: providing access for a person, sending groceries between levels or moving household goods from a basement. Start with who or what needs to travel and the actual route. Size and price alone cannot identify one universal platform for all these tasks.

Step-free access and carrying a person

A vertical accessibility platform

For a level difference at an entrance or another vertical part of the route, consider a platform intended for people with disabilities. Allow for space in front of the platform, entry and exit directions, the upper landing and installation conditions.

A platform along the stairs

Where the route follows a staircase, assess an inclined platform. Photos of the whole flight, its width, turns and space at both ends are needed. The staircase geometry determines suitability.

A ramp where the layout is suitable

An access ramp may be assessed for an appropriate change in level. Available length, landings and ease of use matter. Selection depends on the site, not just the height of one step.

Explore the equipment: Access ramps.

If you are looking for an “electric ramp”, clarify whether you mean a lifting platform. A photo of the level difference and an explanation of who will use it are enough to start the discussion.

Groceries, dishes and small household loads

A kitchen or small service lift may be considered for transferring small goods between levels. Loading height, container dimensions, stops and door positions must suit the household route.

Explore the equipment: Kitchen service lift, Small service lifts.

For larger household loads, compare goods service configurations. These lifts are not intended to carry a person.

Goods between a basement, storage room and other levels

For larger items or loads on a trolley, a vertical or shaft goods lift may be considered after assessing the house. A mast construction may be suitable for a different layout and support arrangement.

Explore the equipment: Vertical goods lifts, Shaft goods lifts, Mast goods lifts, Hydraulic vertical goods lift.

Standard or multi-scissor tables may also be assessed for a defined goods-lifting task. Selection depends on the required travel, platform dimensions, space when lowered and loading conditions.

A shaft and its construction, doors and controls are agreed for the specific project. The phrase “home lift” does not mean that a goods-handling structure is suitable for carrying people.

What to prepare for a consultation

  • Explain who or what needs to move: a person, groceries, boxes or household goods.
  • Send photos of the whole route, not just the proposed installation location.
  • Give the height difference, number of levels and available dimensions.
  • For goods, include weight and dimensions together with packaging or a trolley.
  • Indicate whether the location is indoors or outdoors and any exposure to rain or snow.
  • State whether a shaft, pit or prepared fixing points already exist.
  • Describe the available power supply and intended pattern of use.

Drive power, controls, backup power options, behaviour during a power outage and maintenance access must be agreed for the selected configuration. Do not assume that every lift has battery operation.

Frequently asked questions

Can equipment be installed in an existing house?

Feasibility depends on space, supporting structures, passages and the route. ASPAR assesses the initial information and identifies the preparation work required.

Is a shaft essential?

That depends on the equipment’s purpose and construction. Options with and without a shaft are assessed together with guarding, access and installation requirements.

Can the same goods lift carry belongings and a person?

No such use should be assumed. Carrying a person requires equipment intended for that purpose. The goods-handling products on this page are intended for goods.

What determines the cost?

Purpose, construction, height, platform, stops, options and installation conditions. A calculation is prepared after the initial requirements are clarified.

Select a solution for your home

Send photos of the route, the height and a short description of the task. This helps distinguish accessibility solutions from equipment for household goods from the outset.
