A vertical platform lift moves the user between levels on a separate vertical path. An inclined platform lift follows the staircase. The choice depends on the full site geometry, level change, boarding areas, clear passage and whether the required equipment can be installed.
Key comparison
| Question | Vertical platform lift | Inclined platform lift |
|---|---|---|
| Travel path | Separate vertical movement between levels | Movement along the staircase |
| Main measurements | Level change, entry and exit areas, space for the platform | Stair route, turns, landings and clear passage |
| What ASPAR checks | Space, configuration, suitable model and installation conditions | Route geometry, rail configuration, landings and passage |
| What cannot be set without a survey | The exact model and arrangement | The exact model and route |
When a vertical platform may fit
A vertical path may be appropriate where a separate equipment area and safe entry and exit areas can be arranged at the level change. Check dimensions, lift height, guarding, doors or gates, power supply and integration with the site.
Different vertical platform series have different parameters, so a category range must not be transferred automatically to every model.
When an inclined platform may fit
An inclined platform may be relevant where the route must follow an existing staircase. The survey needs the stair width and configuration, turns, intermediate landings, boarding points and clear passage.
The choice depends on the actual route, not only on the number of steps.
Five questions before selecting a solution
- Between which levels does the user need to travel?
- Is there room for a separate vertical path?
- What is the geometry of the stair route, and must the passage remain clear?
- Which areas are needed to board and leave the platform?
- Which measurements, photographs or drawings are already available?
What completed projects show
In the Kyiv case, ASPAR used a vertical hydraulic platform for a 550 mm level change and a separate aluminium ramp within the entrance area. In the Kharkiv case, two inclined platforms created a route along the stairs in a narrow stairwell. These are examples of different geometry and solutions, not a rule for every site.
What to send for a technical review
Send ASPAR overview photographs, photographs of the stairs or level change, measurements and drawings if available. After review, the team will identify which platform types can be considered technically.
Equipment certification does not replace an assessment of the specific route and building. Choosing a vertical or inclined platform requires a review of the site conditions, landing areas, access and project requirements.
